Research and development for the control of Alien Firefly, Pyrocoelia atripennis, Part 01: Nighttime surveys

Ryukyu Nature Positive is conducting research and development on control techniques for the alien firefly Pyrocoelia atripennis. For this purpose, we have recently been conducting nighttime surveys. We turn off the lumps and search for the light emitted by firefly larvae. Since native fireflies such as Curtos okinawanus also exist, visual confirmation is necessary to count the number of the target larvae. The number of visible larvae varies depending on weather? conditions, even at the same point, so figuring out the factors changing the activity of the larvae is essential to measure the effectiveness of control measures.
