きみの鑑定スキルを試せ！アリ類鑑定シャッフルクイズ / Test Your Identification Skills! A hands-on content using ants

作成したハンズオンゲーム。競争ができるように2つ準備。The hands-on game I developed. I prepared two copies so people could compete with each other.

琉球ネイチャーポジティブが名誉会員として携わらせていただいている沖縄県害虫防除協会で、虫の日イベントが開催されました。

今回は那覇の国際通りでの野外ブースということだったため、それ用のハンズオンコンテンツを開発せねば。

ということで作ったのが、「きみの鑑定スキルを試せ！アリ類鑑定シャッフルクイズ」。

都市環境から森林まで、アリ類はどこにでもいる最も身近で馴染みの深い生き物のひとつ。

そして、ヒアリを始めとした外来種としても重要視されている分類群です。

アリ類は誰もが知っている素材ですが、実際これを教育コンテンツとして利用しようと思うと大きな課題が立ちはだかります。

それは、「小さい」こと。

肉眼ではどうしてもすべての種類が同じように見えてしまう。

そこには機材をそろえたり、そこを補う仕掛けが必要だったりと、工夫が要求されます。

こうした不特定多数の通行人を対象にするようなイベントにおいては、実のところ、アリ類はあまり使いやすい素材ではないのです。

そんな中で、今回は、肉眼から4倍のルーペ程度でも判別できる、大きさや色、おおよその体型などで、どこまで楽しんでもらえるか？の試行でもありました。

結果的には、挑戦者の皆さんにはわりと好評でひと安心。

全問正解者も何人か出てくれて、難易度的にも良い感じでした。

問題としては、午後になって日陰が動き、テントの隙間から差し込む僅かな直射の熱で、ケースを封していたパラフィルムが溶けたこと。。。

沖縄の日差し、恐るべし。です。

The Okinawa-PCO, where the Ryukyu Nature Positive serves as an honorary member, held an “Insect Day” event.

Since this event was to be held at an outdoor booth on Kokusaidori in Naha, I made a hands-on game for it, “Test Your Skills! Ant Identification Shuffle Quiz.”

Ants are one of the most common and familiar creatures found everywhere, from urban to forest.

They are also a group of significant concern as invasive species, particularly the Red Imported Fire Ant.

So ants are a subject everyone is familiar with, yes, but major challenges arise when trying to use them as educational content.

The main issue is their small body size.

To our naked eye, it is not easy to recognize their feature and diversity.

It requires some ingenuity to overcome this limitation—whether it’s gathering the microscopes or devising mechanisms to compensate.

In events like this time, which target a general public of passersby, ants are not actually an easy target to work with.

It was also an experimental challenge to see how much this game could let participants enjoy without microscopes.

I selected common species that could be identified by size, color, and general body shape—species that can be distinguished even with a magnifying glass offering about 4x magnification.

As a result, it was well-received by the participants, and I was relieved.

Several people even got all the questions right, so the difficulty level seemed just right.

One problem, however, was that as the afternoon wore on, the shade shifted, and the slight direct sunlight streaming through the gaps in the tent melted the Parafilm sealing the cases!

The Okinawan sun is truly formidable.
